The MICROSHORT Lab

The Microshort Lab is a chance for emerging directors, writers, actors and cinematographers to get together and make a one page short film. Each lab is supported with a $5,000 budget, gear and mentorship. Time in front of or behind the camera is rare for film artists, but it shouldn’t be. The Microshort Lab aims to be a place to hone your skills in a low pressure environment. Actors can work on delivery, blocking, timing, and scene work with a real crew. Writers and directors can work on the language of film. Cinematographers can test lenses, cameras, movement, and more. All in an afternoon.

An intensive for emerging narrative filmmakers

THE MICROSHORT LAB IS OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS

If you’re interested in a Microshort lab, please provide your information below and submit your one page movie idea. Submissions are open for any and all filmmakers 24 years or younger. No filmmaking experience is required. Filmmakers must be able to attend shoots in the GTA, Hamilton, Guelph or Kitchener/Waterloo. Submissions close June 26th!

Not a writer or don’t have an idea for a short but want to take part in another capacity? Submit without a script and tell us how you would like to be involved!

How does the lab work?

  • Two short ideas will be selected. From there you will work with industry professional producers to start planning your shoot.

  • Who is in your crew? - You are welcome to apply as a team, or assemble a crew after being selected. Your producer will help you fill in the missing roles.

  • What can you spend the $5,000 on? - You can spend your budget on production or post production for your film. Typically this will go toward a location, crew, craft services, post finishing etc. If you want to spend it all on a 16mm camera and film that’s up to you!

  • When do the labs take place? - Both labs will be produced in July/August 2026. Some extensions may be granted.

  • What can you do with your film? - Anything! Submit to festivals, post it online, sell it to a streamer. You own the rights to your film.
